Acoustic Guitar Tabs

§ 0

A guitar tablature, known as tab, is a diagram of strings where finger positions are indicated using numerals corresponding to the appropriate frets. Vertical lines represent the strings of an instrument and the horizontal lines represent the frets and dots indicate finger positions.

The series of horizontal lines forms what is called a staff or stave. Each line represents a string, and the standard acoustic guitar tab has a six-line staff. Numbers are written on the lines. Each represents a fret on the instrument. For example, a number 3 written on the top line means that the player should press down on the high E (top/thin) string (and not the low E, which is thicker) at the third fret. Number 0 stands for an open string.

To denote bends, hammer-ons and so forth, various lines, arrows and other symbols are used. A guitar tab is standardized, but different sheet music publishers adopt different styles in writing guitar music. Songbooks, guitar magazines and journals usually give a legend that specifies the style used.

The tab notation has several advantages over the standard musical notation, which uses a five-line staff. It is often easier and quicker for the player to interpret. Even those adept at reading the standard notation usually prefer the tab notation when it comes to learning to play guitar, because the acoustic guitar is a "harmonic" instrument, meaning that it plays multiple notes simultaneously. Moreover, acoustic guitar staff notation is written on a single staff compared with two for keyboard music. Therefore, it takes less time to read. The tab can also be easily represented using the ASCII code, which makes it easier to distribute electronically.

However, the tab is instrument specific, meaning that music written can only be played on guitar. Also, the tab only includes the pitch of the notes, and not rhythm. But rhythm can be indicated by notes or note stems written above the tab staff. This practice is sometimes adopted in guitar tab notation.

Burning Sword

Sunday, 23 May 2010 § 0

www.myspace.com Figmaster original by John Neville. Band from left to right includes Pat Neville, Matt Neville, John Neville, JJ Neville and Jay Hansen on the bass. The Burning Sword A candle burns, a broken heart Another widow, life torn apart A kid will live, without his dad Another story's, ended sad Restless days, and sleepless nights Tears of grief, and broken lives And endless chain of dominoes One by one down they go And Jesus stands, in a war-torn land Watching death, in the blowing sand The dove flies high, and the hawk flies low Where it ends, no man knows A single sword, a debt to pay A blade so sharp, that it cuts away The flesh and bones, of friends and foes Buried deep, their ashes go A soldier stands, alone in fear Another day, another year A fight has started, without and end A good man dies, another friend And Jesus stands, in a war-torn land Watching death, in the blowing sand The dove flies high, and the hawk flies low Where it ends, no man knows An angry sprit, stands alone Shouting riddles, in a piercing tone Another life, has been sent back A life of promise, in a body sack Yet some have learned, the gift of love forsaken fear, embrace the love Learned to turn, the other cheek But through the light, this darkness creeps And Jesus stands, in a war-torn land Watching death, in the blowing sand The dove flies high, and the hawk flies low Where it ends, no man knows

Music Artists and Fans Closer Than Ever in One Social Networking World

Wednesday, 19 May 2010 § 0

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to get to know your favorite artist? Not the usual stuff like the name of their latest album, or what their lyrics mean or finding out what their star sign is, no much more interesting stuff. I'm sure you have, we all have.

We already like their music, their style, their image, the way they make us feel, what we really want to know about though are all those things that make them seem a bit more tangible and human like, such as who influenced them, what would they be doing if they didn't enter the music industry, what makes them tick, that sort of thing.

Take Paulo Nutini for example, this Scottish guy with the exotic sounding name has Italian roots and really started hitting our iPods with his second album Sunny Side Up, he wanted it to convey joy and it did. Now if he hadn't entered the music industry he would have been working in the family fish and chip shop. That is if he didn't achieve his other ambition of wanting to be a footballer, a goalie to be more precise.

Paolo has a tattoo on his arm of three of the band we know as Texas, he only has three of them because he ran out of cash. He prefers the markets in London to Harrods, he smokes pot, loves Disney songs, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and he has been inspired by Van Morrison, Ray Charles and the Drifters. He also admits to listening to nineties dance hits like 'I like to move it' by Real2Real and 'Boom Boom Boom' by Out here Brothers. Altogether an all round nice guy is our Paolo.

So what about James Blunt? His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps and join the military, which he did, and after serving six years he got out. Only a couple of weeks later he had signed a contract and was well and truly ensconced in the music market. Now that is fast.

He says his musical inspiration came from his mother who made him learn the piano at the tender age of 7. One of the strangest things that he has ever done is put his sister up for sale on eBay. He really did that. She couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland so he listed her as a Damsel in Distress that needed a Knight in Shining Armour to get her there. In pops a guy with a helicopter to rescue her and the two of them ended up married. How romantic. Yes, our James has a bit of eBay addiction and has sold the entire contents of his flat on the site.

Let's look at someone completely different, like Katie Melua. She grew up in communist Georgia; well she did till she was 8. Katie always wanted to be a politician or a historian and said if she could rule the world she would be able to bring about world peace. Oh, the innocence of it all eh? Her inspiration came from Queen, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan and of course Eva Cassidy. Her song, 'Faraway Voice' is a tribute to Eva.

Kate's early entry into the music industry was at the age of 15 when she entered a singing competition and won. Apart from winning a bedroom makeover and an armchair for her dad, she also got to appear on TV. She was eventually "discovered" by Wombles guy Mike Batt when studying at the Brit School for Performing Arts. Batt wasted no time in signing her up to his Dramatico label.

Back in the old days of Donny Osmond, the Jackson Five and David Cassidy, our 'heroes' seemed so out of reach and took on an almost god like status. Nowadays, with the evolution of the internet and only 3 degrees of separation they are a lot closer. R and R World has evolved that two degrees further and through an innovative social networking site of the same name provides the opportunity for fans and artists to communicate and support each other directly in one beautiful world. Now that's cool.

Know the Parts and Technical Terms For the Piano

Tuesday, 11 May 2010 § 0

The piano was first created on 1709 by Bartolomeo Cristofori. He carried out different mechanisms by means of putting a keyboard above the wooden casing of harpsichord. Through the years, the piano with a variety of types in function was designed and the sounds had been developed. In the 13th century, the modern piano was first created. Pianos have been broadly used melodic instrument because of its flexibility.

Before learning the piano, we must first be familiarized with the bodily parts of the piano, how to use it and the technical terms. Here are some of the important piano parts for the beginners:

The Keyboard - these are the parallel row of keys which were used by the performers in producing sounds and the music. These rows of keys were sheltered by foldable top which closes it over. The keyboard has a total of 99 keys; 56 white and 36 black.

The Keys - with the piano beginners, you have to know that the keys were the part that being pressed to produce a note. There are sets of white and black keys allied horizontally. In the past years, a black key was made of ebony and the white key was done by ivory. At these present days, because of the safety concern from the species producing ivory, the keys were now made from quality plastics.

Pedals - pianos were made with the corresponding three pedals located at the bottom. First pedal from the left is the Soft Pedal and sometimes identified as Una corda, this is utilized in shifting the keyboard a little to the right so it will modify the sound of a note to make it softer. Middle pedal or the Sustenuto only acts to those keys that are pushed by the pedal stepped into. Third and the last pedal or the Sustain Pedal was used mainly for removing the interruption that can cause the vibration while playing the piano.

Music Rack - this is for the keeping of piano paraphernalia such as manuals and music sheets, everything that is used in playing the piano most specially to the piano beginners.

Piano Bench - this is the position where we sit down as playing with the piano.

Technical terms to remember

Octave - this is what we call the interval of twelve keys created between the two notes with a similar musical value. Piano keyboards are made of seven octaves, that way; each one of the seven notes will materialize in every seven octaves of the keyboard.

Pitch - this is the characteristics of the note sounds, neither higher or the lower notes.

Basic position guidelines in playing the piano

Sitting and Standing - sitting is the commonly used position in playing the piano because it can give you the most effective level in controlling your hands and fingers. Standing is commonly used by the electronic keyboardist most especially for the rock bands.

Keyboard Height - you should always make sure of your keyboard height is not above the level of your elbows.

3 Tips to Help You Learn to Play Piano at Home Easily

Wednesday, 5 May 2010 § 0

So you want to learn to play piano at home? Get ready for some stinging stumbles and intense stress along the way.

Just kidding! Don't be turned off by that. There are a lot of resources and tips that help you learn to play piano at home. And I'll be spilling down some of the tips that helped me greatly in this endeavor.

These tips are really easy to remember. Let's name it H.O.P. and you'll see later why. But before that here are some more guidelines that would help:

Keep a piano nearby. You need to have access to this because...that's what you're practicing to play! Pretty logical, isn't it?

Surround yourself with supportive people. No matter what your endeavor is, there will be hard times along the road. You need people who can cheer you up and give you a pat on the back during these times.

Now let's get to the learn-to-play-piano-at-home tips...

"H" For Have Fun

There's no point in doing something that you don't enjoy. Your reason for learning to play piano could be to please your family or look sophisticated before your friends. But if you're not having fun, you'll burn out and stop.

Have fun playing those ivories!

"O" For Optimistic

A very outgoing friend of mine once told me: "Whether you think you can or you can't...you're right!"

He's right! If you surround yourselves with negative thoughts while trying to learn to play piano at home, you'll stumble and fall more times than you'll care to count. Keep a positive outlook no matter what. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A word of warning: Don't go overboard and aim to be a Mozart in 2 weeks. These maestros practiced for years. You'll be setting yourself for a huge disappointment if you go for an unrealistic aim like the one I mentioned.

"P" For Practice

Just like any attempt in life, may it be playing the piano, passing an exam, or whatever, you need daily practice. Setting 20-30 minutes to learn to play piano at home is a lot better than setting an hour every week.

Be consistent!

There it goes...the H.O.P. All you need now is have the lessons available. You could hire an instructor, buy lessons on DVD, or you can learn to play piano at home with a good online course.

Think about which suits you best.

Civil War Food - What Union and Confederate Soldiers Ate

Tuesday, 4 May 2010 § 0

The modern U.S. army has a wide array of food products available to them in base camps and in the field. There are a large number of MREs (which are actually quite tasty) and other portable foods available to them when on missions and when stationed in hostile terrain. And when posted at an established base camp, the food that is prepared is also quite good. A large part of this is of course the ready availability of large quantities of any sort of food imaginable in today's modern environment. In fact, today's soldiers have the best food ever made available to a fighting force.

But it wasn't always that way.

Take the Civil War. Civil War food kept the soldiers fed and not much else. Lets take a look at the diet that comprised the typical Civil War food ration. There were several issues that affected the food that was supplied to the Civil War soldiers. These include the organization of the Commissary Department - which was tasked with the acquisition and distribution of food to the soldiers in the field, the season which determined if fresh food was available or if it was preserved in some way and the ability of the food to stay good for long term storage and transportation.

Prior to the war, the concentration of Commissaries was in the North so when the Civil War began, the North had a great advantage as they already had an existing Commissary Department that was already trained in how to acquire and transport food to soldiers in the field. Their job was to work with the troop numbers and schedules and keep a constant supply of foods going to each area where troops were stationed so that the soldiers could keep on fighting without worrying about where their next meal would be coming from. It took the Confederacy several years to develop a working Commissary so being a soldier of the South was more difficult. It required real dedication to be fighting when you didn't know where your next meal was coming from. Because of this lack of infrastructure, the South had to do a lot of foraging for food between battles until the supply lines were up and operational.

Civil War soldier food was typically very simple fare - often consisting of meat, coffee, sugar and hardtack - a type of dried biscuit. The meat was often salted or dried so it would last a bit longer and fruits and vegetables were rarities on the battlefield. Because the soldiers were often in the field, they needed to carry rations with them. They had a special bag - called a haversack - which was made of canvas with an inner cloth bag that could be washed to get food debris cleaned out once in a while. But even with this design, the bags were often quite contaminated and foul smelling. Cleanliness was typically not high on the Civil War soldiers priority list.

Union soldiers and Confederate soldiers typically had a different mix of rations. A Union soldier might have salt pork, fresh or salted beef, coffee, sugar, salt, vinegar, dried fruit and vegetables. And if it was in season, they might have fresh carrots, onions, turnips and potatoes. A Confederate soldier typically had bacon, corn meal, tea, sugar, molasses and the very occasional fresh vegetable.

The other difference in Civil War food between the Union and Confederate armies was the type of bread product they had available to them. Confederate soldiers had something called "Johnnie Cake" that they made in the field from cornmeal, milk and a few other ingredients. The Union soldiers had hardtack, also referred to as "tooth dullers" or "sheet iron crackers". Hardtack was manufactured in large factories in the North and was a staple food for the Union soldiers. Hardtack got its name because it was often not used until months after it was made and during that time, it hardened rock solid which is how it got its nicknames.

As you can see, food has come a long way due to the advent of technologies that allow for better preservation of a wide variety of foods. Gone are the days of weevil infested hardtack. They have been replaced with modern vacuum seal technologies that allow foods to stay fresh and tasty years after they have been packages. And since they say an army is run by its stomach, it is no surprise that the modern soldier is the best the world has ever seen.

Music As A Hobby

§ 0

Music is a universal phenomenon, which evolved into an art form over a course of time. The different elements of sound and silence like - pitch, vibration, rhythm, structure, texture, timbre, lyrics all combine in a creative whole to make musical compositions, which have delighted the soul of man since times immemorial.

Ancient man must have learnt to create this phenomenon by hearing the natural sounds of the elements, birds and animals. The audible language of vibrations is common to all incarnations, ages, classes and castes. This form of expression is graded in various ways - in terms of creativity, composition, meaning and performance. Its quality is primarily governed by socio- cultural conditioning and the sensitivity of the individual artist. As a genre of art, it can be classified as fine art and performing art.

Music is the most ardently pursued hobby among human beings of all ages and nationalities. The therapeutic value of the same has been proved in recent times through many researches. It is also seen to have a very positive effect on plants and animals. Children are encouraged by their parents to make it their hobby, for its de-stressing and sensitizing qualities.

It is difficult to distinguish 'types' in this art - which are most suitable as a hobby. The range and variety of this genre which can be pursued for pleasure (as a hobby) is indeed mind boggling. People who pursue it as a hobby can operate as appreciators, patrons and collectors if they are not able to sing and play themselves. Amateur musicians or hobbyists are known to compose and perform for pure aesthetic delight, ceremonial, religious and community purposes without any commercial considerations. They indulge in this as a hobby - and a love affair with this form of creativity usually lasts for life.

Music plays like an instinct in all forms of life. Human beings understand and respond to musical vibrations in a variety of emotional and mental ways. Numerous instruments have been constructed by them to create symphonies and songs in tremendous variety. Similarly, there are thousand ways of composing and rendering musical notes in all the languages of the world. Musical expression can be either instrumental or vocal. There is no dearth of resources and material for individuals, who want to make it their hobby. Schools and classes for musical training are available for all those who wish to cultivate this sense in most countries of the world.

TI Paper Trail Album Review

§ 0

The life of Atlanta's trapper-turned-rapper par excellence sure hasn't been any less hectic since the release of last year's somewhat under whelming T.I. vs. T.I.P. His swaggering new effort Paper Trail, recorded while Tip was on house arrest, shows an artist who has come full circle and is comfortable in his skin, finding a measured balance between hood anthems and radio-friendly ear candy.

Set to be serving a one year jail sentence next year, T.I. is certainly living for the moment throughout Paper Trail, showing a newly found enthusiasm after sleepwalking his way through parts of his drowsy last album. This is Tip-ified (I couldn't resist) by the appropriately-titled banger Live Your Life, where his confident delivery is further bolstered by Just Blaze's rousing sea of synthesizers and a spirited hook from pop princess Rihanna. On the note of coming full circle, it is heartening to hear T.I. and former rival for the crown Ludacris come together, bringing future superstar B.o.B. along too, for the Atlanta anthem On Top of the World.

While Tip does his share of celebrating and back-patting, as he has shown during his seven years in the rap game he doesn't take for granted the position he is in and appreciates the gravity of the legal troubles he has had, using it as a motivational tool. The lead single No Matter, easily one of the year's brightest moments, is his version of singing the blues, the airy guitar work complimenting his sobered delivery.

Being a T.I. release, and a celebratory one at that, he takes it to the club on more than one occasion. First there is the Swizz Beatz collabo Swing Ya Rag, a solid but by-the-numbers sequel to 2004's superior Bring Em Out. Then there is Whatever You Like, a track so sugary sweet that it is no shock that it is currently ruling the radio roost. Yes it is perfectly catchy and has a certain appeal but overall Whatever You Like, which is accompanied by possibly one of the corniest video's ever made, just doesn't sound like T.I. and thus is left sounding a little forced. Similarly, the monstrous collabo that is Swagga Like Us, with its M.I.A vocal snatch, is also omnipresent and hard to ignore, as T.I., Kanye, Jigga and Weezy get their superstar swagger on.

Amidst the heavyweight bravado are refreshing cuts like the reflective Slide Show, featuring the gifted John Legend and the hater-proof My Life Your Entertainment with Usher, a strong addition despite Tip dropping another nauseating Tupac comparison. To close the proceedings, the dynamic duo of Justin Timberlake and Timbaland drop by to return T.I.'s favour on the My Love-sounding Dead and Gone.

His public profile at an all-time high and creativity in tact, Paper Trail finds T.I. at his confident best, delivering the worthy follow to 2006's King that T.I. vs. T.I.P. should have been. If he keeps his act together and keeps recording material like this, the paper trail for T.I. could be unlimited.

Piano Lessons Make Learning Music Theory Easy and Fun for Kids!

§ 0

If your children know their alphabet and how to identify numbers and count, they're old enough to start learning music theory. In piano even young children can learn music theory concepts on the keyboard as they develop their musical ear.

Below are twelve Music Theory concepts children learn in their first year of piano lessons.

1. Finger Numbers

2. Circle of Seconds (or Steps) - Musical Alphabet Up and Down

3. Circle of Thirds (or Skips) - Line Notes and Space notes

4. Chords - Broken Chords and Blocked, in the Key of C, F and G

5. Half Steps and Whole Steps

6. Five-Finger Scales

7. Octaves

8. Intervals - 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths

9. Sharps

10. Flats

11. Treble Clef

12. Bass Clef

In just twelve months your child could know all these music theory concepts and a whole bunch more if you enroll them in piano lessons today. In addition to music theory first year piano students are trained in performance and artistry. Can you imagine your children playing the piano in your living room, or performing in their first piano recital? There is nothing that warms parents' hearts more than seeing their children engaged in a creative activity that is challenging and beneficial.

Children are made to absorb language. So why not enroll your child in piano lessons while they're young? You can't make a better investment in their future. The benefits or piano lessons are well documented - increased math and reading scores, increased overall educational progress, and children in music lessons are less likely to engage in unproductive behaviors that are harmful to them as they grow. So don't wait to give your children the gift of music. You'll be glad you did.

Download Remote Music in Your Remote House With Satellite Broadband

Saturday, 1 May 2010 § 0

If you like to go to music festivals, you've probably had the experience of falling in love with a band, then never being able to find their music again. This goes double for those living in rural or remote areas without broadband internet. If you are dealing with dial-up, just finding a hard to come by music file doesn't mean you will be able to listen. Instead, it means you are in for a few days of downloading, or are looking at the untouchable music track. It's right there in front of you but your 56k modem just doesn't have enough juice to download it. While this feeling can be defeating and tragic, and your friends are probably getting sick of having to download music for you, there is an answer out there: satellite internet.

Without the ability to connect to DSL or cable terrestrial broadband internet, many internet subscribers just give up and stick with dial-up. However, if you're a music or movies lover as you've noticed it's not so easy to get a hold of rare media when you live in a rural or remote area. When you aren't able to access broadband internet that problem is made even more complicated. Instead of sitting around moping, get online and get researching the alternatives. The most popular new way to get broadband is available without all the cords and wires of regular broadband. Instead, this revolutionary new internet provider sends signals from outer space directly to your home.

With satellite internet, the World Wide Web can be at your fingertips with full, high speed, broadband service just like all your helpful friends have. With download speeds up to 50 times faster than with dial-up, before you know it all the kids on the block will be heading to your house to get their favorite album, movie, or live recording downloaded in record time. Now, with satellite broadband you will finally be able to hook up your iPod to your own iTunes account instead of your neighbors, will be able to access all those great indie films you've only read about previously, and even be able to get some of your school work done too... of course in record time.

The world of dial-up has been left in the past by the vast majority of internet users. It doesn't seem probably that much of the world is still stuck with such an outdated service, but that certainly seems to be the case when you live in the rural or remote United States. Travelling a long way to festivals can already be a drag, even though the road trip is half the fun, and getting home without the ability to keep up with your favorite new bands can be even worse.

Instead of saying "I heard them once," say "I've been a fan for years," when your favorite new bands make it big with the help of satellite broadband. Everybody likes to catch a band at the beginning of its career. Stay at the forefront of the music scene with satellite service.
